On Friday 26th September we celebrated European Day of Languages and students and staff got into the spirit of the day by taking part in number of events. There was a Primary Languages festival in the Richard Smith Hall in the morning, with 150 primary pupils from Holmgate, Hunloke, Deer Park and Grassmoor primary schools, along with 40 Year 11 Foreign Language Leaders. Activities included celebrity spotting and a sing-song in French, German and Spanish led by the Year 11 Leaders.
In the afternoon, forms in Years 7 - 11 had a special languages themed Learning For Life lesson addressing the question 'Why should I learn a language when so many people in the world speak English?' and looking at the variety of languages in the world.
Hamper Challenge was as competitive as ever - staff tried to incorporate languages into their lessons. Students told Student Services which staff and faculties did a good job. The winning faculty this year was English, with Science coming second. English won a hamper of European foods. Runner-up prizes went to Science, and certain other members of staff whose names were mentioned by students.
Mrs Gamble, Deputy Head of Modern Forign Languages, said: "Many thanks to all involved and to our wonderful Year 11 Foreign Language Leaders who have now completed their Foreign Language Leader Award."
