Tupton Hall's Under 13 girls defeated Frederick Gent school to qualify for the Chance To Shine indoor cricket county finals held at Derbyshire CCC in March. The girls were joined at the finals by Trent College, West Park School and Bolsover School. It was the latter that Tupton came up against in their semi-final match.
Tupton fielded first and tremendous bowling performances from Millie Standen, Elizabeth Clayton, Aidan Greenfield and Leah Harrison saw Bolsover restricted to a relatively low total in their 12 overs. Abbie Greaves and Mollie Stanley opened the batting for Tupton and were keen to chase down the total as quickly as possible playing some big shots in the first over of the innings. Their fearless approach backfired, as both girls were caught out on the boundary early on. However, Tupton had great strength in depth and Standen, Clayton and Georgia Hagues-Stirk batted confidently to give Tupton the win and a place in the county final.
Tupton faced West Park School in the final and again ended up fielding first. Tupton started incredibly well, with the first 8 overs bowled by Standen, Clayton, Greenfield and Harrison only going for 21 runs. The runs began to leak in the next few overs before Jodie Burton showed excellent control with her bowling at the end of the innings to restrict West Park to 64 runs in their 12 overs. Greaves and Stanley were keen to improve on their semi-final performance at the top of the order for Tupton and they showed great maturity in their batting. Both girls performed exceptionally to give Tupton a fantastic start to their chase, with Stanley having to retire after surpassing 15 runs in the first few overs of the game. Clayton stepped in next and produced a remarkable show of power hitting to win the game for Tupton. The tournament had not seen a six all day, but Clayton soon put an end to that as she hit 3 sixes in 4 balls to give Tupton victory with several overs to spare and with all of their wickets intact.
The girls were crowned county champions and will now travel to Lancashire in April to represent Derbyshire at the regional finals where they will battle it out for a place in the National finals at Lord's.
A massive well done to all the girls who took part!
