     A-Level (OCR)

    What skills and previous experience will I need?

    It is not necessary to have studied Business previously but a thorough interest in the concepts is needed. Good literacy skills are important as you will be required to read lengthy case studies and construct structured arguments when writing exam answers. You will also need good mathematical understanding of e.g. percentage calculations.

    A grade C or above in GCSE Mathematics and English Language is a minimum requirement.

    What will I study?

    • The internal functions of contemporary   business organisations of all types
    • The dynamic external environment within which businesses operate
    • Topical issues that can generate change for business organisations
     • The range of stakeholder perspectives that can be taken on business activities

    The AS units focus on small to medium-sized businesses operating within local and national markets. The two units are assessed around the following content:

    • Business objectives and strategic decisions
    • External influences facing businesses
    • Marketing and marketing strategies
    • Operational strategy
    • Human resources
    • Accounting and financial considerations

    The A2 units build on the AS units by considering more complex business scenarios and focussing on strategy, as opposed to tactics. Content taught:

    • Business objectives and strategic decisions
    • External influences facing businesses
    • Marketing and marketing strategies
    • Operational strategy
    • Human resources
    • Accounting and financial considerations
    • The global environment of business

    Both A2 units are synoptic.

    Skills acquired:

    • Data skills
    • Presenting arguments and making judgments and justified recommendations
    • Recognising the nature of problems, solving problems and making decisions
    • Planning work, taking into account the demands of the task and the time available to complete it
    • Conducting research into a specific theme in preparation for one or more tasks
    • Challenging their own assumptions using evidence that has become available

    How will I be assessed?

    You will study several units in Year 12. These units will be assessed through exams focusing on a variety of skills.

    • The local business environment, HO31/01, 1,5h, 80 marks
    • The wider business environment, HO31/02, 1,5h, 80 marks

    In Year 13 you will study further units in order to complete you’re a- Level. These units will be assessed through exams focusing on a variety of skills.

    Operating in a local business environment, H431/01, 2hours written paper, 80 marks

    • The UK business environment, H431/02, 2hours written paper, 80 marks
    • The global business environment, 2hours written paper, 80 marks
